Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Unit – Massa
Presentation
The Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Unit combines rare skills and highly complex procedures, and represents the hub of knowledge for life support within the hospital.
Our anaesthetic and resuscitation care teams for cardiac surgery activities allow us to be among the very few in Italy who take care of critical and congenital heart patients, from newborns to the elderly.
We have ad hoc anaesthesiological and intensive care procedures for every heart condition
We have eliminated the use of blood for most surgeries, thanks to the point-of-care coagulation laboratory, which allows us to control perioperative bleeding.
We constantly monitor all interventions, thanks to transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), including 3D.
Major milestones.
The combination of highly specialised nursing skills and the use of the most advanced technologies allows us to offer advanced treatments (invasive and non-invasive ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, renal replacement therapy, cardiovascular and respiratory mechanical assistance). The adoption of accelerated pathways for recovery after surgery allows for a median stay of 1 day.

Research and scientific activity
The Ospedale del Cuore is a regional reference centre for the activity of paediatric ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), and also a reference centre of the Apuo-Versilian area for the use of adult ECMO. The Unit’s doctors are part of the local health authority ECMO team, ensuring that patients are taken care of in a specially dedicated shock room. In collaboration with the BioCardioLab, it conducts a line of research on the study of flows in circulatory care.
